There are some places in Westport that you don’t necessarily think about as a destination—until you spend an evening there and realize just how special they are.

That happened to me last week at Wakeman Town Farm.

I planned a surprise birthday dinner for my husband there, bringing our family together for an evening at the farm. I had driven past Wakeman Town Farm numerous times, but this was my first time spending time there—experiencing it with family, good food, plenty of conversation, and the beautiful farm setting all around us—gave me a huge appreciation for what a wonderful community resource it is.

And judging by everyone’s reaction, I wasn’t the only one!

So, What Exactly Is Wakeman Town Farm?

Located at 134 Cross Highway, Wakeman Town Farm is a community farm and sustainability center in the heart of Westport.

It is much more than a traditional farm.

The Farm describes itself as an organic demonstration homestead and “living classroom,” with a mission centered around local food production, sustainable practices, education, and community service.

And that’s really what makes it interesting to locals.

You can stop by to walk the grounds, see the gardens and animals, pick up something delicious at the Farmstand, sign your children up for a class, attend a seasonal event—or even host a special celebration there.

It is one of those places where community, nature and everyday life all come together.

The Saturday Farmstand Is a Local Favorite

One of the easiest ways to experience the Farm is to stop by the Farmstand.

During the season, the Farmstand is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with produce grown at the Farm, fresh-cut flowers, honey, Farm merchandise and products from Connecticut vendors.

Depending on the week, you might find everything from local breads and pastries to coffee, jams, olive oil, salsa and other Connecticut-made products.

And it’s not simply a place to shop.

You can walk through the gardens, say hello to the animals from a respectful distance, chat with the farmers and enjoy a little taste of country life—without actually leaving Westport.

That’s a pretty wonderful combination.

There Is Something for Kids at Almost Every Stage

For families, Wakeman Town Farm is particularly appealing because the programming goes far beyond a one-time visit.

There are programs for babies and toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children and teens, along with camps and cooking programs.

Kids can get their hands dirty in the garden, interact with farm animals, learn about where food comes from and even cook with ingredients grown right at the Farm.

Current programming includes everything from Little Farmer Parent + Me programs to inclusive programs for neurodiverse children and hands-on cooking classes for kids and teens.

For parents looking for activities that get children outside, engaged and away from a screen, that’s a pretty valuable resource right in town.

And It’s Not Just for Kids

This is one of the things I think people sometimes overlook about Wakeman Town Farm.

Adults have plenty of reasons to go, too.

The Farm offers cooking classes, workshops, gardening experiences, special dinners and seasonal events. Its calendar regularly includes opportunities to learn something new, enjoy good food and spend time with other people in the community.

And then there are the special events.

The Farm’s annual Harvest Fest, for example, brings together food, wine, music, gardens and community on the Farm grounds.

It’s the kind of programming that adds a little unexpected variety to life in Westport.

A Beautiful Place to Celebrate

Which brings me back to our family dinner.

We celebrated my husband’s birthday at Tim’s Kitchen, Wakeman Town Farm’s event space.

And I have to say—the setting made the evening.

Tim’s Kitchen has a wonderfully relaxed farm-chic atmosphere, with a great room opening toward the gardens and grounds. The space can accommodate intimate seated dinners as well as larger gatherings and cocktail-style events. The Farm also works with local caterers and encourages the use of seasonal and locally sourced food whenever possible.

For our family, it was the perfect setting for a milestone celebration.

There was something about being surrounded by gardens and the Farm itself that made the evening feel special without feeling formal.

Good food. Family. A beautiful setting. And no need to dress up the experience to make it memorable.

Everyone loved it.

And yes, I took plenty of pictures and videos—which may have been almost as much fun as the dinner itself!

A Little Piece of Country Life—Right in Westport

Perhaps what I like most about Wakeman Town Farm is what it represents.

Westport is known for its beaches, restaurants, cultural attractions, beautiful homes and proximity to New York City.

But there are also these wonderful little pockets of community life that give the town its personality.

A Saturday morning at the Farmstand.

Kids learning how to care for animals.

Picking up fresh flowers.

Walking through the gardens.

Taking a cooking class.

Meeting friends at a seasonal event.

Or gathering your family around a table for a birthday dinner.

Those experiences may not show up on a real estate listing’s feature sheet—but they are part of what makes a community feel like home.

And If You’re Looking at Homes Near Wakeman Town Farm…

I have a particularly good reason to be talking about the Farm right now.

I know homeowners who will soon be selling their home just around the corner from Wakeman Town Farm.

And while proximity to the Farm certainly isn’t the only reason someone would fall in love with the property, I think it is one of those lifestyle details that is worth knowing about when you’re considering a home in this part of Westport.

Because buying a home isn’t just about the house.

It’s about where you go on Saturday morning, where your kids spend an afternoon, where you gather with friends, where you celebrate birthdays—and the little places that become part of your family’s story.
